Zoonoses Transfer, Factory Farms and Unsustainable Human–Animal Relations

Infectious diseases are rooted in unsustainable and unjust human–animal relationships. Zoonoses facilitated by human proximity to animals, epidemiological risk embedded within factory farms, exploitation of animals humans these intensive livestock production systems. The five major categories that farms propel include: intensification for which homogenous populations congregated, creation multi-species different held the same farm, long animal transport increases likelihood interaction with other wildlife, ecological characteristics pathogen lead altered dynamics antibiotic resistance a population through overuse antibiotics. Layer broiler operations North American context illustrate linkages. One Health is offered as concluding conceptual aspirational frame pursuing more sustainable just world. This article offers two main messages. First, our relationships directly impact health transmission Emerging Diseases (EIDs). Second, adopting means forward relations reduction zoonoses transmission.
